Mathematical biology, a program in the field of applied mathematics, aims to represent biological processes using a variety of mathematical tools and techniques. Mathematical modelling has direct impact in areas such as disease prevention, the development of ecosystems and waste management. York offers Canada’s only degree in mathematical biology, and as a fourth-year student, you will have the opportunity to acquire real-life problem-solving skills in a required research project. Honours Minor (BSc)
An Honours program takes 4 years, while a bachelor takes 3 years. The Honours degrees differ in the number of courses required in the discipline (with Specialized Honours requiring the most). A Major can be combined with another Major or a Minor degree, but it doesn't have to be. A Minor degree in mathematical biology must be combined with an Honours Major in biology or an Honours Major in kinesiology and health science. Students pursuing a Major may choose an area of application in biology or health, or pursue general interests. Examples include: Biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, human biology/anatomy, genetics/molecular genetics, plant science, ecology, epidemiology, immunology, virology, biomechanics, etc.
Outlook: As a program graduate, you will leave with the tools and knowledge allowing you to help solve the problems of modern life. Career paths include: biomathematician, disease-prevention specialist, pharmaceutical researcher, conservationist.
